Work through these categories systematically from highest to lowest risk.

Shut off main water immediately Do not wait to find the source—stop flow at the house first. Cut power to wet areas if safe to do so Turn off breakers where water is near outlets, switches, or fixtures. Document everything right away Photos or video of active leaks, meter, and valve positions. Start drying immediately Fans, towels, wet-vac—evaporation limits mold and swelling. Call your insurer and line up help Plumber, restoration, or MyHuis—early response protects your claim.

Complete this 10-minute check before moving on.

Water meter stillness test Turn off all faucets; if the meter moves, water is escaping somewhere. Walk every fixture Sinks, toilets, and water heater—look for drips or damp bases. Scan ceilings and walls Stains, bubbles, or soft drywall often mean water above. Check exterior hose bibs After pressure returns, look for splits and slow drips. Garage and attic peek Moisture or dripping lines are easy to miss. Photograph anything suspicious Wide context plus close-ups help later with repairs and claims.

Confirm all faucets are off Before opening the main, every indoor tap should be closed. Open the main slowly Quarter turns with listening pauses—rush can stress cracked lines. Purge air at one cold tap Briefly open a single faucet to release trapped air. Re-check the meter with water off Everything closed inside—meter should stop moving. Watch the water heater zone While pressure returns, scan for weeps at connections and pan.

Under every sink Supply lines, P-traps, and shutoff valves—feel for moisture. Behind each toilet Supply valve, flex hose, tank bolts, and base seal. Flush test Two flushes each; confirm tanks refill and fully stop. Laundry connections Washer hoses, valves, and wall box for drips. Refrigerator water line Ice maker supply—slow leaks hide behind the fridge.

Inspect every hose bib Look for cracks, drips, and damaged vacuum breakers. Exercise each spigot Open fully, then close—confirm a clean stop. Wall penetration check Siding or stucco near bibs—soft spots or staining inside? Irrigation backflow Visual crack check before energizing the system. Short irrigation test Run one zone briefly; watch for geysers or saturated spots.

Attic pass Wet insulation, drips on framing, or darkened sheathing. Roof penetrations Vents, chimneys, skylights—moisture trails nearby. Ceiling walkthrough Bubbles, yellowing, or soft drywall under wet areas. Garage overhead Staining on ceiling or walls from pipe runs above.

Write a simple timeline When you noticed damage, what you shut off, and who you called. Photo pairs Wide room context plus close-ups of damage and serial plates. Save mitigation receipts Fans, dehumidifiers, materials, and professional visits. Document drying steps Insurers expect proof you limited further damage. Call early if damage is active Saturation or spreading stains—get guidance before it worsens.

Now: initial full pass Complete every section above once through. 6–12 hours: quick repeat Sinks, toilets, heater, and ceilings again. 24 hours: full walk-through Same route as day one—note any new staining. 48 hours: hidden areas Attic, garage ceiling, and closets along wet lines.
